Downtown Moline, Moline, IL

On October 28th, 2023, the streets of Downtown Moline came alive with vibrant floats, joyful music, and an amazing sense of community as Mercado on Fifth hosted its 2nd Annual Dia de los Muertos Parade.

Beautiful floats gracefully glided through the parade route next to the Vibrant Arena. Each float paid homage to the traditional Mexican holiday that honors ancestors and loved ones who have passed away. The elaborate displays, all unique works of art, told stories of heritage and remembrance, transforming the streets of Moline.

Horses and interesting cars were featured, some of the local school bands even got to showcase their musical talents. Latin bands played music as well, only adding to the wonderful energy in the air.

Immediately following the parade, the After Life Party was held on the Mercado grounds. Just a short walk away, local vendors filled the air with the scent of some amazing Latin cuisine. Live bands played whilst event goers strolled through Mercado. Families enjoyed the music, ate, and danced together while children were able to get their faces painted with colorful designs.

The annual Dia de los Muertos Parade and Afterlife Party, hosted by Mercado on Fifth, proved to be a testament to the power of community, culture, and the enduring spirit of remembrance and celebration. Finally, as the event capped off we were able to interview one of the hosts of the event Maria Ontiveros, who’s grandfather Bob Ontiveros who single handedly changed the lives of thousands of people within the Quad Cities.
